Petition Title:

Making Eid an Official RIT Holiday

Petition Description:

There has been several times where the choice of attending classes and celebrating Eid conflicted with one another, forcing the individual to make a choice that shouldn't need to be made. Now with Ramadan right around the corner and soon, the fall semester approaching, we need everyone to stand for change!

Even if the choice is made to go to the Eid prayer, students have to run back to campus for classes. This limits the celebration, and cuts it short. The two, and only, Muslim holidays are celebrated once a year and to not have the opportunity to celebrate once a year and be with friends and family makes the situation more strenuous.

This is not accommodating to Muslims, especially when considering that RIT is extremely diverse. From the page of Diversity and Inclusion, quoted, it says, "At RIT, you'll live and study with more than 2,600 International students from 100 countries." It's important that we educate one another on the different cultures that are on campus and embrace our uniqueness.

Let's take a stand for diversity on the campus and create more inclusion and understanding between the people on campus. Together, let's take a step forward in building an even stronger and more unified community!

Sincerely,

Zayneb and Nasreen Jaff
